The Tree of Knowing
The Touchstone Center for Children, a nonprofit educational organization founded in New York City in 1969 by its present director, Richard Lewis, was established in the belief that all persons have natural creative, imaginative and artistic capacities, which when encouraged and allowed to develop, find unique expression in each individual.
Beginning in the winter of 2006, a major Arts and Education project of the Center was The Tree of Knowing Garden. Under the direction of Richard Lewis, in collaboration with the Center’s artists, Claudia Keel, Kathy Creutzburg and Noah Baen – and the staff, children and parents of the East Village Community School a beautiful yard was created. The inner courtyard of the school became a space for imaginative thinking and reflection for children and all members of the community.
The Touchstone Center for Children will celebrate its 40th anniversary this spring.
