the meaning of home

is an environmental portrait collection of new york mothers in their homes.

about myself

i’m a new york based portrait photographer and single mother to a ten-year-old boy, currently in the process of finishing my first book project entitled ‘lotus beauty – mothers in nyc’.

the meaning of home

is a new personal project with the goal to create a second book and gallery show.

about the concept

the meaning of home is a photographic study of mothers providing and maintaining a home for their children. showing a sense of your home, revealing a small glimpse of a possible intimate moment and showing the soul of your home. when we can say ‘i’m going home’, we can assume that basic survival needs have been met; a relative stability has been achieved. as a mother you are forming a circle of care, with daily routines, sometimes celebrations and traditions.

i love my home, it’s neither fancy nor large, but it’s cozy, mostly because we painted it in what i call ‘happy colors’. i came to new york twelve years ago, with a dream, with my love for the city and with a search for home that is within me and i carry it with me wherever I go. only those who come to visit really appreciate the wonderful details that make our house/apartment a home. i spend so much time in my kitchen, some of the time to cook, preferably calling out spelling words at the same time and often i stand there to think. my kitchen is my personal thinking space, my time-out space, finding relaxation and hearing myself breathe, and it is our space for a tradition we hold on to; no matter how the years fly by and how mature my son is getting, every christmas season we stand there again baking cookies.

the process

i’m looking for mothers from all walks of life with a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and traditions. to participate you need to be at least eighteen years old, be a mother and have your children still living in your home.

if you are interested to participate we will schedule a time for the photo shoot in your home, a two-hour time window is ideal. the main focus is on you in your home, but your children are welcome to participate.

in preparation

i will ask you to answer these three questions by email before we have the photo shoot

where were you born and raised?

what is the most important aspect for you when you think about your home?

which is your favorite tradition that you practice in your home?

as a thank you for your participation you will receive a disk with a selection of photos for you to keep. please provide me with your address for the photo shoot and to send you your disk. on the day of your session i will ask you to sign a model release, so that I can use the photos possibly for my portfolio, the book project and show and to promote this project. the photos will not be taken out of context or used for any commercial purposes.

please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

i’m looking forward to meeting you.

My photo
in the past four years i specialized in working with mothers, children, youth and family; it’s what i enjoy and love the most since i’m a mom myself. with my photography it’s all about you, about a moment, an afternoon or a day in your life; with a range from a portrait session to a full documentary or special occasion in your life. i take on private commission and commercial assignments with a main focus on women, children and youth support. what will your story look like ?
